Saat tiba gilirannya tampil, Yong memilih lagu milik George Benson yang berjudul After All.

Namun Yong tetap tampil percaya diri.

Ia memetik gitar dengan tenang, mengikuti irama karaoke yang sesekali terdengar seperti sedang mencari arah pulang. Anehnya, semakin lagu berjalan, semakin banyak yang ikut menikmati penampilannya.

Begitu lagu selesai, ruangan mendadak hening beberapa detik.

Lalu terdengar tepuk tangan meriah.

Yong Barnas: The Guitarist Who Became SSEAYP 1989’s Walking Karaoke Machine

Among the IPY participants of SSEAYP 1989, Yong Barnas was always associated with one thing: his guitar. From the very first day of the program, he was entrusted as the group’s guitarist, accompanying countless musical activities throughout the voyage. Nobody doubted his talent because he seemed to know the chords of almost every SSEAYP song by heart.

Legend has it that Yong never needed a songbook.

Just mention a song title and within seconds his fingers would already be finding the correct chords.

“Yong, can you play this song?”

“Sure.”

“What about that one?”

“Of course.”

“What about the song we heard five minutes ago?”

“No problem.”

Eventually, many participants concluded that Yong was not an ordinary human being. He was actually a walking chord encyclopedia disguised as an SSEAYP participant.

One of his most memorable moments came during a talent and sound performance session. When it was his turn to perform, Yong chose George Benson’s After All. It was a bold choice, considering the song’s smooth jazz style and emotional complexity.

The challenge was that technology back then was nothing like today. There were no streaming platforms, no professional backing tracks, and no live orchestra waiting backstage. The only accompaniment available was a simple karaoke track.

Yet Yong stepped onto the stage with complete confidence.

He calmly played his guitar while following a karaoke track that occasionally sounded as if it was trying to find its way home. Somehow, the longer he performed, the more captivated the audience became.

When the song ended, the room fell silent for a few seconds.

Then the applause erupted.

One friend whispered, “Was that Yong Barnas singing, or did George Benson accidentally join SSEAYP tonight?”

Everyone burst into laughter.

That evening, everyone agreed that three things had never changed since SSEAYP 1989: the warmth of friendship, the songs that always brought people together, and Yong Barnas, who could play virtually any chord before anyone else had even finished saying the song title.
