Stage One: The Story Often Predates the Script

Someone has already decided which story is worth the bet before anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set. If you follow a few hits backward, you often discover a book at the start of the process. Jami Davenport’s novel Shutout is the source of ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, comes from a novel by Cora Reilly. Korea’s 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which has a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. Some app owners also run reading businesses, so source material sits reelshort app close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater runs the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. Lacking a book, writers fall back on tested tropes such as revenge, billionaire romance, identity reveals and family drama. Condensing a long drama story into scenes that each serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds is the script’s job.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

Casting is where the format’s economics surface on screen. Scan the cast lists for short series on IMDb and the same names keep turning up. ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha was led by Noah Fearnley in 2024 and he returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. In 2025, Rosa Singerman headlined two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the second opposite Franky Cammarata. Leads with a following on one app reach the next title with a head start, and that counts for a lot when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Producers also cast with a certain viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women. DramaBox runs a production team in Los Angeles.

Stage Three: Filming Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

TheWrap places the typical cost of a Western short drama at $150,000 to $300,000 per series, with filming taking eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is much the same, putting $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day: that is what a 70-episode series shot in eight days requires, if you do the arithmetic. Jiuzhou Culture, one of the Chinese producers selling abroad, has reported leaner numbers still, placing a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Each finished episode therefore costs roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Jiuzhou also said about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had produced for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations, while 20 percent were original overseas productions. Because dubbing lets a studio recycle a finished domestic series, the pricey shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Trimming to 60–100 Seconds

In the edit suite, episodes of 60 to 100 seconds are carved from the footage and framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is designed around a question the next episode promises to answer. Cliffhangers are the house style, serving as the mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next. Added up, the segments of a 70-episode series add up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts differ widely by title; GoodShort’s official pages, for example, list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. The same footage can reach viewers who never open the app, because ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Editors are, in other words, shaping video dramas for multiple screens at the same time.

Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Falls

The final creative decision is also a commercial one. Under the standard model described by TheWrap, the first eight to ten episodes are free. According to ReelShort’s own blog, its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. After that, episodes are unlocked with coins, and ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. The same blog says one ad unlocks two premium episodes, so watching ads is another way to earn coins; another option is a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. Prices differ by platform, country and promotion, so your store may show something different. Placement is where the controversy lies: among the most common complaints about these apps are paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall are unofficial and best left alone.

Stage Six: Animated and AI-Generated Series

With the newest production stage, the camera is gone entirely. Alongside its live-action library, ReelShort now carries animated motion comics. Arthur Lancaster, the protagonist of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who repeatedly framed him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series has the same title, but it should not be confused with this one. No app has gone further than DramaWave: 36Kr reports that more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated and that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have also spread beyond the apps: Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed as much on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Production Line

Fox Entertainment is the clearest example of traditional studios paying attention. In October 2025, Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, took on an equity investment from Fox. Over two years, Fox also pledged to produce more than 200 vertical titles. Among the Fox-produced series already on the app are Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service, and Holywater brought in a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital. When a network-scale producer signs up to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has moved from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Glance

Placed side by side, the stages bring the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest revolves around the shoot, the expensive, fixed block. The edit is engineered around cliffhangers that feed a paywall, casting leans on familiar faces, and scripts tend to arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. Fans who look up a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, yet TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the whole category. The typical time and cost at each stage are summed up in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. It says so rather than guessing when no reliable figure has been published.

Script and source material No published figure A novel, web fiction or proven trope is adapted; Breaking the Ice comes from Shutout, Bound by Honor from Cora Reilly’s novel
The casting stage No public figure Leads are picked, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this step
The shoot 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are shot for a vertical frame
