The A Team

The A Team
On the green lawn of Bayview Beach Resort Penang, the SSEAYP 1989 alumni proved that cross-country friendship is not only meant for discussion panels—but can also be practiced directly on the grass. We were divided into four groups, each made up of participants from different countries, and challenged to become a solid team. The result? A beautiful circle of friendship that looked peaceful, united, and… slightly reckless for people aged 55 and above.
The action—sitting in a circle while holding hands and feet—may look simple in the photo, but trust us, this was a true test of balance, trust, and international diplomacy. Someone focused on staying upright, someone made sure no hands were slipping, and someone else quietly checked that all sandals were removed for safety reasons. Everyone was serious, yet nobody was tense—because every few seconds the air was filled with laughter and classic SSEAYP comments that instantly broke the seriousness.
For participants over 55, this activity felt like time travel back to youth… with a small reminder from the knees that this was not 1989 anymore. Some moved confidently, some moved slowly while managing their breathing, and others relied entirely on smiling as their main survival strategy. But one thing was clear: no group wanted to be the first to give up. International solidarity turned out to be stronger than muscle fatigue.
In the end, this photo became proof that SSEAYP 1989 is not just a memory, but a living bond. At Bayview Beach Resort Penang, we didn’t just form groups—we rebuilt trust, laughter, and the courage to do slightly “crazy” things together. Age may increase, movements may slow, but the spirit remains the same: if you can still laugh together, you’re definitely still one team.
