Carolus Patampang selaku Ketua bersama RD. I Made Markus Suma selaku Wakil Ketua.

KAMS Diocesan Synod Meeting Discusses Vision, Mission, and Pastoral Direction Towards the 2027 Synod

by Dirk Sandarupa

MAKASSAR — The Steering Committee of the Diocesan Synod of the Archdiocese of Makassar (KAMS) held another preparatory meeting in a hybrid format, combining an in-person meeting with online participation. The meeting focused on deepening the understanding of the vision and mission of the Synod, while aligning perspectives on its direction, process, and strategic issues as part of the journey towards the KAMS Diocesan Synod 2027.

The meeting was led by Rev. Fr. Carolus Patampang as Chairperson, together with Rev. Fr. I Made Markus Suma as Vice Chairperson. The steering team also includes Rev. Fr. Fredy Rante Taruk and Rev. Fr. Aidan Putra Sidik, while Sr. Christine M. Sumaraw, SJMJ serves as Treasurer.

Several members attended the meeting in person, including Ansel, Fr. Saverianus R. HHK, and Dr. Dirk Sandarupa. Meanwhile, online participation broadened the scope of the meeting, with Kustedjo and Dona, Yulius B. Pasolon, Martinus Pagasing, Merry, and A. Ranteallo, along with other participants, joining virtually.

A central theme of the meeting was synodality as an essential dimension of the life and mission of the Church. One of the presentations emphasized that the People of God are called to participate in the Bishop’s pastoral mission through the Diocesan Synod. The discussion also referred to provisions of the Code of Canon Law concerning Diocesan Synods, particularly Canon 460 and related canons, which describe the Synod as an assembly of selected priests and members of the Christian faithful who assist the Diocesan Bishop for the good of the entire diocesan community.

The meeting also identified four major challenges that encourage the renewal of KAMS’ pastoral movement: the synodal movement, the signs of the times, pastoral consolidation, and universal alignment. These four dimensions provide a framework for responding to the contextual needs of the local Church while remaining in communion with the universal Church.

Further discussions mapped out several strategic issues for communal discernment, including the evaluation of the pastoral strategic plan, kerygma and catechesis, Catholic Social Teaching and the economy, global issues and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the digital era, family and psychology, Catholic education, socio-cultural concerns, and ecology or “Mother Earth.” These themes reflect the Synod’s effort to read the signs of the times and formulate relevant pastoral responses to the changing realities faced by the faithful.

Another important emphasis was the active participation of the faithful from grassroots communities to the diocesan level. The Pre-Synod process is expected to reach communities across the Archdiocese, providing space for the experiences, aspirations, challenges, and hopes of the faithful to become an integral part of the Church’s communal discernment.

Through this series of meetings, the Steering Committee continues to refine the Synod’s vision, mission, substantive priorities, and implementation process. The journey is expected to become a genuine opportunity for the Church to walk together, listen, engage in dialogue, and discern together, ensuring that the KAMS Diocesan Synod 2027 is not merely an institutional agenda but a meaningful pastoral process involving the People of God in the life and mission of the Church.

“Walking together in communion, participation, and mission towards the KAMS Diocesan Synod 2027.”
