IS A DEPUTY DIRECTOR NECESSARY IN A HOTEL CORPORATION?
The position of Deputy Director within hotel corporations is often viewed as ambiguous. Structurally, this role is relatively uncommon in international hotel organizations. According to the KPMG Hospitality Governance Report (2022), only 18% of hotel groups in Asia formally maintain a deputy director position.
In practice, the role typically emerges during leadership transitions, risk management phases, or when ownership seeks closer representation in daily management—particularly in family-owned hotel corporations. However, without clearly defined authority, the position risks adding bureaucratic layers rather than strategic value.
Management scholar Dr. Rhenald Kasali (2021) argues that overly hierarchical structures slow responsiveness in service industries such as hospitality, where speed and adaptability are critical. Hotels require clear command lines, not overlapping authority.
Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS, 2023) shows that most national hotel corporations operate efficiently with lean structures consisting of a President Director, Operations Director, and supporting functional divisions.
Therefore, the Deputy Director role is not inherently necessary. Its relevance depends entirely on whether it carries explicit authority and strategic responsibility rather than symbolic hierarchy.
