NIPPON MARU CORNER: SINGAPORE, WE ARE COMING !
In 1989, after departing from Jakarta, the participants of the Nippon Maru Program once again adjusted to the rhythm of life at sea as the ship set its course toward Singapore. The farewells to their foster families and the vibrant pulse of Indonesia’s capital still lingered in their hearts, yet the ordered routines aboard the vessel soon reclaimed their days. The Participant Youth (PY) returned to structured schedules—morning assemblies, assigned duties, and briefings—marking a gentle transition from the intimacy of land-based encounters to the reflective space of the open ocean.
Throughout the voyage, the PY shared responsibilities alongside the crew. They rotated through cleaning duties, assisted with deck work, and took part in basic training on navigation and maritime safety. These tasks cultivated discipline and sharpened their awareness of mutual reliance. Within the confined world of the ship, each participant learned to value time, order, and cooperation as the quiet foundations of communal life aboard the Nippon Maru.
Between routines, life on board unfolded as a space for personal growth and cultural exchange. The PY gathered for group discussions, moments of individual reflection, and rehearsals for cultural performances to be presented in Singapore. They exchanged stories of their homestay experiences in Jakarta, compared impressions of culture and daily life, and committed their thoughts to travel journals. Through these conversations and shared silences, their understanding of one another deepened, and the journey itself began to take on lasting meaning.
As Singapore drew nearer, a calm, contemplative atmosphere settled over the ship. The PY prepared themselves—both mentally and emotionally—for the next port of call, while gazing out across the wide, unbroken sea. On the deck, they spoke of the future, of friendships quietly taking root, and of life lessons slowly shaped by the voyage. The passage from Jakarta to Singapore became an essential interval of transition, a sea-bound chapter in which the PY of Nippon Maru 1989 learned to balance discipline, reflection, and togetherness amid the vastness of the ocean.
