NIPPON MARU CORNER: PRE-DEPARTURE ACTIVITIES – IPY 1989
Before embarking on the Nippon Maru for the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) 1989, participants underwent a series of structured pre-departure activities in their home countries, followed by initial orientation in Japan. These activities were designed to prepare participants academically, culturally, psychologically, and administratively for the intensive international program.
First, all participants were selected through a national selection process organized by the respective governments of ASEAN countries and Japan. In Indonesia, this process involved competitive screening that assessed candidates’ leadership potential, communication skills (especially English proficiency), social awareness, and commitment to international cooperation. Successful candidates were officially appointed as national youth representatives, carrying the responsibility of acting as cultural ambassadors during the program.
Second, selected participants were required to attend a Pre-Departure Training (PDT) program conducted in their home country prior to departure. This training typically lasted two to three weeks and focused on orientation about SSEAYP objectives, leadership development, group dynamics, and intercultural communication. Participants were also trained in teamwork, conflict management, and basic protocols for living together in a confined ship environment. The PDT was essential in building discipline, adaptability, and mutual understanding among national delegates.
Third, participants received cultural and academic preparation. This included preparation for National Presentations, where each country would showcase its culture through presentations, performances, or exhibitions. Participants practiced presentations, cultural performances (such as traditional dances or songs), and prepared discussion materials for onboard seminars and discussion groups. In addition, they were introduced to the cultural norms and social etiquette of Japan and other ASEAN countries to minimize cultural misunderstandings during the voyage.
Fourth, participants completed all administrative and logistical preparations prior to departure. These included passport processing, medical examinations, travel documentation, insurance arrangements, and packing according to official guidelines. Participants were also briefed on ship regulations, safety procedures, dress codes, and codes of conduct. Although major costs were covered by the program, participants were responsible for personal readiness and compliance with program rules.
Finally, upon arrival in Japan, participants joined all national contingents for initial orientation and official opening ceremonies before boarding the Nippon Maru. These activities introduced the full multinational structure of SSEAYP, clarified program schedules, and formally marked the transition from national preparation to international engagement. Only after these steps were completed did participants officially embark on the Nippon Maru and begin the sea-based phase of the program.
In summary, prior to boarding the Nippon Maru in 1989, SSEAYP participants underwent comprehensive preparation that emphasized leadership development, cultural diplomacy, administrative readiness, and international cooperation, ensuring that they were fully equipped to participate effectively in one of the most prestigious youth exchange programs in the Asia-Pacific region.
