Di sebuah sudut Penang yang hangat (bukan cuma karena cuaca, tapi juga karena hati), para alumni SSEAYP 1989 berkumpul mengelilingi meja makan seperti keluarga besar yang lagi reuni Lebaran—bedanya, ini versi ASEAN. Ada yang datang dari Jakarta dengan logat khas, dari Brunei dengan gaya kalem, dan dari berbagai penjuru lainnya. Begitu duduk bersama, tidak ada lagi negara, paspor, atau zona waktu. Yang ada hanya satu identitas: “kita ini keluarga lama yang kebetulan beda negara.”
Vibes-nya? Jangan tanya. Ada yang sibuk nambah kopi, ada yang masih ngunyah tapi sudah ketawa duluan, dan ada juga yang baru sadar kalau orang di depannya dulu sekamar 36 tahun lalu. Obrolan lompat-lompat dari kenangan kapal SSEAYP, foto-foto jadul yang bikin ngakak, sampai topik serius seperti… siapa yang sekarang paling cepat capek kalau habis makan banyak. Semua tertawa, karena di meja itu umur boleh nambah, tapi rasa kebersamaan tetap sama.
Dan tentu saja, reuni ini tidak lengkap tanpa Ayi, peserta Indonesia yang sekarang tinggal dan bekerja di Belanda. Setiap ada reuni SSEAYP, Ayi selalu muncul seperti tradisi wajib—cuti diambil tanpa ragu, kerjaan ditinggal tanpa drama. Katanya sederhana, “Kerjaan di Belanda bisa ditunggu, tapi nostalgia sama saudara se-ASEAN ini nggak bisa diganti.” Mendengar itu, semua langsung terharu… lalu bercanda, “Pantesan Belanda sering hujan, Ayi-nya sering pulang.”
Akhirnya, Reuni SSEAYP 1989 di Penang ini pun terasa lebih dari sekadar pertemuan lama. Ini adalah bukti bahwa persahabatan lintas negara bisa bertahan puluhan tahun, berubah jadi keluarga besar yang penuh tawa, cerita, dan kopi tanpa batas. Dan mereka semua sepakat: selama masih bisa duduk bareng, tertawa bareng, dan saling ejek dengan penuh sayang—ASEAN versi 1989 ini akan selalu hidup.

In a cozy corner of Penang—warm not just because of the weather, but also because of the hearts gathered there—the SSEAYP 1989 alumni reunited around one table like a big family having a festive reunion. Some came from Jakarta with their unmistakable accents, some from Brunei with calm elegance, and others from faraway places. The moment they sat together, passports, borders, and time zones disappeared. There was only one identity left: an old family that just happens to live in different countries.
The vibes? Impeccable. Someone was busy refilling coffee, someone else was laughing with a full mouth, and another suddenly realized the person across the table used to be their cabin mate 36 years ago. Conversations jumped effortlessly from SSEAYP ship memories to embarrassing old photos, and then to very serious topics—like who gets tired the fastest after eating too much. Everyone laughed, because at that table, age may have increased, but the sense of togetherness clearly hadn’t.
And of course, no SSEAYP reunion is complete without Ayi—the Indonesian participant who now lives and works in the Netherlands. Whenever there’s a reunion, Ayi appears like a sacred tradition. Leave from work is taken without hesitation, deadlines are abandoned without regret. His reason is simple: “Work in the Netherlands can wait, but nostalgia with my ASEAN brothers and sisters cannot.” The group was touched… and immediately joked, “No wonder it rains so much in the Netherlands—Ayi is always away.”
In the end, the SSEAYP 1989 Reunion in Penang turned out to be much more than a gathering. It was proof that cross-border friendships can survive decades and grow into a loud, loving family filled with laughter, stories, and unlimited coffee. And they all agreed on one thing: as long as they can sit together, laugh together, and tease each other with love—the ASEAN of 1989 will never grow old.
