NIPPON MARU CORNER: ASSEMBLY MEETING POINT
In 1989, the participants of the Nippon Maru Program felt a deep sense of anticipation when their ship first anchored in Brunei Darussalam, designated as the assembly meeting point. This arrival marked the beginning of their collective journey, bringing together young people from many nations who had previously departed from different ports. At the harbor, they were welcomed through a modest yet gracious reception by local organizers and government representatives, setting a tone of warmth and mutual respect from the very first moment they stepped onto Bruneian soil.
During their initial days in Brunei, the participants took part in orientation sessions and formal gatherings. They were introduced to the aims of the program, the voyage schedule, and the shared codes of life aboard the Nippon Maru. Group discussions and introductory activities became vital spaces for connection, allowing each participant to encounter unfamiliar cultures, languages, and worldviews, and to begin shaping bonds of trust within the newly formed community.
Beyond official engagements, the participants were invited to experience the cultural life of Brunei. They visited historic sites, mosques, and cultural centers, and engaged directly with local youth. Cultural exchange unfolded naturally through artistic performances, traditional games, and shared meals, deepening the participants’ understanding of Bruneian values and ways of life.
As night fell, a growing sense of unity settled over the ship at anchor. Gathered together, the participants exchanged first impressions, quiet anxieties, and hopeful expectations for the long voyage ahead. Brunei, as the point of first convergence, was more than a temporary port of call; it became the formative ground where friendship, shared purpose, and the spirit of togetherness were first carefully set in motion for the Nippon Maru journey of 1989.
