Mesin berbunyi. Air keluar. Bukan kopi. Wajah tamu tetap yakin: “Ini mesin aneh.”

Yang absurd, hampir semua tamu merasa dirinya ahli kopi dadakan. “Biasanya saya pakai mesin begini,” kata mereka, padahal setiap mesin punya kepribadian sendiri.

Ketika kopi keluar terlalu encer, mesin disalahkan. Ketika terlalu pahit, mesin disalahkan. Ia hanya bekerja sesuai perintah, meski perintahnya sering ngawur.

Lucunya, setelah kopi jadi, tamu sering berdiri lama memandangi cangkirnya. Tidak langsung diminum. Mereka menyesap sedikit, lalu mengangguk pelan.

Keajaiban kecil dibiarkan terjadi demi harga diri manusia.

Mesin kopi hotel bukan soal minuman. Ia soal kendali.

manusia suka merasa ahli,
terutama saat lelah.
Dan secangkir kopi yang “berhasil dibuat sendiri”
sering kali lebih memuaskan
daripada kopi yang rasanya sempurna.

THE HOTEL COFFEE MACHINE AND HUMANS WHO SUDDENLY FEEL LIKE EXPERTS

Hotel coffee machines are the most underestimated and most challenged devices. They look strong, have many buttons, and make confident sounds. But the moment a guest stands in front of one, human confidence rises without any scientific basis.

Some guests stare at the machine like facing an old enemy. They read the short instructions, nod as if they understand, then press a button that clearly has nothing to do with their goal. The machine makes noise. Water comes out. No coffee. The guest remains confident: “This machine is strange.”

Absurdly, almost all guests suddenly become coffee experts. “I usually use machines like this,” they say—despite every machine having its own personality. Some put sugar in before the coffee. Some wait without placing a cup. Others press the cappuccino button and look shocked when foam appears.

When the coffee is too weak, the machine is blamed. When it is too bitter, the machine is blamed. When the cup is forgotten and coffee spills onto the floor, the machine is still blamed. The hotel coffee machine has developed immunity. It simply follows instructions—even when the instructions are nonsense.

Funny enough, once the coffee is ready, guests often stand still and stare at the cup. They do not drink immediately. They take a small sip, then nod slowly, as if confirming the coffee’s legitimacy. Just minutes earlier, they had no idea which button they pressed.

As staff, we are often called to “help with the coffee machine.” We arrive, press two buttons, and coffee appears perfectly. No long explanations. No lessons. Small miracles are allowed to happen for the sake of human dignity.

Hotel coffee machines are not really about coffee. They are about control. On half-awake mornings, being able to make coffee yourself—even incorrectly—creates the illusion that life is still manageable.

From hotel coffee machines, I learned this lesson:
humans love feeling like experts,
especially when tired.
And a cup of coffee “successfully made by yourself”
often feels more satisfying
than a perfect cup made for you.
