CATATAN PERJALANAN: OPERASI KHUSUS MENCARI WARUNG BU IMAS BANDUNG
Kalau ada yang bilang, “Ke Warung Bu Imas gampang, Bang!”
Saya jawab:
Akibatnya?
Luar biasa.
Motor keluar.
Motor masuk.
Anak-anak sekolah bergerombol.
Orang tua menjemput.
Mobil mencoba lewat.
Motor mencoba menyelip.
Kami mencoba bertahan hidup.
Rasanya seperti memenangkan undian.
“Selamat! Anda mendapatkan satu lot parkir.
Setelah kendaraan aman, kami berjalan menuju warung.
Dan begitu duduk, semua drama perjalanan tadi langsung terlupakan.
Karena makanan datang.
Ikan emas goreng.
Nah, ini baru masalah serius.
Gorengannya mantap.
Gurih.
Renyes.
Tetapi kemudian datanglah pemeran utamanya:
SAMBAL BU IMAS.
Suapan pertama:
“Wah, enak.”
Suapan kedua:
“Wah, pedas.”
Suapan ketiga:
“Wah, tambah nasi.”
Di sinilah logika mulai kehilangan kendali.
Otak mengatakan:
“Sudah cukup.”
Perut menjawab:
“Belum.”
Lidah mengatakan:
“Pedas.”
Tangan tetap mengambil sambal.
Hasilnya satu:
Nasi tambah.
Sambalnya benar-benar membuat mata melek sekaligus merem.
Tetapi ketika membayar, dompet masih berkata:
“Terima kasih. Saya masih sehat.”
Menghadapi trafik pulang sekolah.
Berjuang mencari parkir.
Ternyata perjuangan tadi memang layak.
Tetapi kalau makanannya luar biasa:
Jalan sempit kita lewati.
Trafik padat kita hadapi.
Parkir kita perjuangkan.
Sambal kita lawan.
Dan setelah semuanya selesai:
Kita ingin datang lagi.
MAKANAN ENAK MEMBUAT ORANG RELA TERSASAR.
Bandung punya banyak tempat makan.
Tetapi tidak semua tempat makan mampu membuat orang rela melewati perkampungan padat, menghadapi trafik pulang sekolah, berjuang mendapatkan parkir, kemudian duduk sambil melek-merem menikmati sambal.
Warung Bu Imas bukan sekadar tempat makan.
Ia adalah sebuah perjalanan.
Datang dengan perjuangan.
Makan dengan kebahagiaan.
Pulang membawa cerita.
Dan yang paling berbahaya:
Besoknya masih teringat sambalnya.

TRAVEL NOTES: A SPECIAL OPERATION TO FIND WARUNG BU IMAS IN BANDUNG
If someone says, “Going to Warung Bu Imas is easy, bro!”
I would say:
“Easy if you already know where it is.”
The problem was, this time we deliberately set out to find the original Warung Bu Imas, located right in the middle of a densely populated neighborhood in Bandung.
So, do not imagine a restaurant with a spacious courtyard, a grand entrance, valet parking, or a security guard standing there saying, “Welcome, Sir.”
None of that.
Instead, we found ourselves asking:
“Excuse me, Sir. Which way is Warung Bu Imas?”
Enter the alley.
Turn.
Look right.
Look left.
Ask someone.
Turn again.
Until finally, a serious question emerged:
“Are we actually looking for a food stall, or are we participating in a field-orientation competition?”
It turns out that Warung Bu Imas is located right next to a school.
And, as if arranged by a movie director, we arrived exactly at lunchtime, which also happened to be school dismissal time.
The result?
Absolutely extraordinary.
Motorcycles coming out.
Motorcycles going in.
Groups of students everywhere.
Parents picking up their children.
Cars trying to get through.
Motorcycles trying to squeeze past.
And we were simply trying to survive.
The traffic was no longer just busy.
It had officially entered the category of full-scale traffic escalation.
Fortunately, after quite a long struggle, we managed to find a parking spot not too far from Warung Bu Imas.
In a situation like that, finding a parking spot is no longer just a facility.
It is a blessing.
It felt like winning the lottery.
“Congratulations! You have won one parking spot. Your prize may be collected after you successfully escape the traffic jam.”
Once the vehicle was safely parked, we walked toward the food stall.
And the moment we sat down, all the drama of the journey was instantly forgotten.
Because the food arrived.
Fried goldfish.
Now, this was serious business.
The fried fish was fantastic.
Savory.
Crispy.
Even with just a plate of warm rice, it already made the entire journey feel worthwhile.
But then came the real star of the show:
BU IMAS SAMBAL
This was not an ordinary chili sauce.
This sambal had the extraordinary ability to test the relationship between human beings and their own self-control.
First bite:
“Wow, delicious.”
Second bite:
“Wow, spicy.”
Third bite:
“Wow, more rice, please.”
This was the moment logic began to lose control.
The brain said:
“That’s enough.”
The stomach replied:
“Not yet.”
The tongue said:
“It’s spicy.”
The hand kept reaching for the sambal.
Eventually, a national compromise was reached between the brain, tongue, and stomach.
The result was simple:
More rice.
The sambal genuinely made our eyes go wide and then close at the same time.
Eyes open because of the heat.
Eyes closed because of the pleasure.
So, if you see someone eating at Warung Bu Imas with their eyes closed, do not immediately assume they are reflecting deeply on life.
They might simply be paying their respects to the sambal.
And what made the experience even better was the price.
It was still very much warung-style pricing.
Now that is a beautiful combination.
The taste can be extraordinary.
The sambal can make you sweat.
But when it is time to pay, your wallet can still say:
“Thank you. I am still healthy.”
Interestingly, Warung Bu Imas has now also opened in Bandung.
So for Bandung residents, visitors from Jakarta, as well as travelers from other parts of Indonesia who are visiting Bandung, it is now even easier to enjoy the distinctive flavors of Bu Imas.
It is no surprise that this place has become one of the culinary destinations people actively seek out.
Because apparently, when Jakartans visit Bandung, they are not always looking for factory outlets, coffee shops, or Instagrammable places.
Some arrive with a much more serious mission:
Finding fried goldfish and sambal.
And it turns out that when the food is good enough, the journey to get there becomes part of the experience.
First, finding the road.
Then entering a densely populated neighborhood.
Facing the school-dismissal traffic.
Fighting for a parking spot.
Finally sitting down peacefully.
Then enjoying fried goldfish and sambal that make your eyes go wide and then close in pure satisfaction.
Only afterward do you realize:
The struggle was absolutely worth it.
The conclusion of the journey that day was simple.
If the place were ordinary, perhaps we would not have gone through all that trouble to find it.
But when the food is extraordinary:
We take the narrow roads.
We face the heavy traffic.
We fight for parking.
We battle the sambal.
And when everything is over:
We want to come back again.
Because there is one law of the culinary world that still holds true:
GOOD FOOD MAKES PEOPLE WILLING TO GET LOST.
And Warung Bu Imas is living proof.
Bandung has countless places to eat.
But not every food stall can make people willingly navigate a crowded neighborhood, face school-dismissal traffic, fight for parking, and then sit down with their eyes going wide and closing while enjoying sambal.
Warung Bu Imas is not merely a place to eat.
It is a journey.
You arrive through struggle.
You eat with happiness.
You go home with a story.
And the most dangerous part?
The next day, you are still thinking about the sambal.
